While it is responsible to consider electing competent members to state parliament, the people in the electorate of Murray should realize that it doesn’t matter who is elected, the decline in irrigated agriculture and forestry, and by extension the decline in the prosperity of all the people in this area, will continue.

Politics is numbers, and the number of lower house politicians based in Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong is 70, while the number based in the rest of the state is 23.

Further, in 2015, 11% of voters in the metropolitan areas voted for The Greens.

The lack of agricultural constituents and the need to appeal to Green voters ensures that no metropolitan politician seeking re-election will consider supporting the  irrigation or forestry industries.

It is realistically not possible to make political decisions in N.S.W. that are beneficial to irrigated agriculture or forestry.

The people in inland areas, in particular the Riverina, need to separate from N.S.W. and form their own state. Only then will decisions beneficial to the irrigated agriculture and forestry industries, and by extension beneficial to all the people, be able to be made.

When it comes to the state election in March, voting to form the state of The Riverina is the only vote that will make a difference.
