The NSW Irrigators Council reports that ‘Tanya Plibersek is targeting Australia’s food bowls in the Murray-Darling Basin for another 450 billion litres of water for the environment that the environment doesn’t need. Minister Plibersek should be investing in fixing what’s still making our rivers sick, such as European carp wrecking water quality and native species habitat. The water recovery policy is a lose-lose for the environment, family farms, small towns and Australian households who want to buy Aussie-grown’.

The Federal Government, via the Murray Darling Basin Authority, with the consent of the NSW and Victorian State Governments, is removing another one third of irrigation water. How much food production, and how many jobs, and people will this remove from the Riverina and the irrigation areas of northern Victoria? In one word – Heaps!

The solution is to form a Riverina State. This State will resume its Constitutional authority over water (and forests and other natural resources) and use this water responsibly for the immediate benefit of the people in this State, and for the consequent prosperity of all Australians.

The Australian Constitution. Section 100.

Nor abridge right to use water.

The Commonwealth shall not, by any law or regulation of trade or commerce, abridge the right of a State or of the residents therein to the reasonable use of the waters of rivers for conservation or irrigation.
