Three hundred jobs will be gradually axed as Bega Cheese closes its northern Victorian operations. It’s a devastating blow for the Strathmerton community, with the closure to be complete by mid-next year.

Though not described as a cause by management, I am confident that the large decline in milk production in the Goulburn Valley caused by the removal of water from dairy farms can be considered the primary reason for this closure.

I am also regrettably confident that Bega Cheese won’t be the last large or small business to close due to the suppression of the irrigated agriculture industry.
