Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act.

The Constitution is the law that governs Australian government.

Of particular relevance, Section 100 of the Constitution states that:

‘The Commonwealth shall not, by any law or regulation of trade or commerce, abridge the right of a State or of the residents therein to the reasonable use of the waters of rivers for conservation or irrigation.’

The Australian Constitution guarantees The Riverina State authority over the water within its boundary, including the Murray River. The importance and benefit of this guarantee to the people in The Riverina cannot be overstated.
