The ABC reports that Tanya Plibersek has convinced Green and independent Senators to vote in support of the Labor Party’s Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023. This support will ensure the bill is passed.

This legislation will repeal the limit placed on Federal Government water purchases.

There has been significant public discussion about this legislation allowing the purchase of the additional 450 gigalitres of water written in the current Basin Plan, but it appears that the repeal of the limit will theoretically allow the purchase of any quantity of, including all, water.

The disastrous effects of the Federal Basin Plan on the livelihoods of the people in much of the Riverina appear to now be unlimited.

The ABC article can be read here.

The key points in the bill as described on the Parliament of Australia website can be read here.
