Bondi Murders, Firearms, Islam.
The murders at Bondi are tragic and have caused the the necessary examination of many issues.
A brief summary of two issues that immediately concern me follow:
Self defence and firearms:
Self evidently, every man, woman and child has the natural right to defend his or her life. Consequently, every man, woman, and child has the same right to the means necessary to accomplish this. The means necessary, as the Bondi murders show, includes the possession of firearms. It is therefore self evident that every Australian has the natural right to possess firearms if he or she desires.
Also self evidently, due to the possibility of this right being abused, as occurred at Bondi, an infringement of this right may be enforced individually, subject to reason and evidence. The onus and responsibility for this being the burden of the State. Without reason and evidence though, an infringement of this right is unjust, and as the murders at Bondi have shown, potentially deadly.
For information on the practical effect of firearm laws, an interesting interview on Spotify with the eminent U.S. firearm crime researcher, Dr John Lott, is linked HERE.
Islam.
There are numerous commands in Islamic scripture for violence. Islam appears to have been an integral part of the Bondi murderers’ motivation. There have been innumerable acts of violence overseas by actors claiming obedience to Islam. In my opinion, a public examination of Islam and its relevance to Australia is both necessary and urgent.
