NSW Will Create and Compulsorily Acquire Farm Easements To Enable Desired Environmental Water Flows
The Weekly Times 30/10/24.
This is a significant escalation in hostile government to farmer interaction.
This action by the NSW government is not merely a threat as plans are already in place.
While Victoria states that it has ruled out using its compulsory acquisition power to achieve the same result, its inaction can be considered due to one or both of the following:
1) Victoria is negotiating more money from the Federal Government, knowing that it will eventually pay whatever is required to achieve Victoria’s co-operation. Victoria will likely co-operate when this is achieved, similar to this linked previous example.
2) This can be seen a staggered approach between NSW and Victoria to avoid arousing opposition in both States at the same time. It can be expected that Victoria will enact the same programme after the rural opposition in NSW is overcome.
Federal and State actions indicate that there will be no end to environmental water demands until there is no irrigation water extracted from rivers at all. This will have a massive detrimental effect on the people in these irrigation areas.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that only a Riverina State can preserve the livelihoods and prosperity of these people.
